How Laparoscopic Surgery is Performed and What are its Benefits?
Laparoscopic
surgery, also termed as minimally invasive surgery (MIS), includes
the application of a thin tubular device known as a laparoscope. It
is inserted through a minute incision into the abdomen to perform
even the most complex operations which previously required a large
incision. The recovery time needed after laparoscopic surgery is
shorter than traditional open surgery due to smaller wounds. Also,
the patient experiences minimum pain during and post surgery. Today,
laparoscopic surgery is extensively performed to treat a wide range
of medical conditions. At Medanta Medical Hospital, expert and
well-experienced Laparoscopic

What
is a Laparoscope?
A laparoscope is a long and firm fiber-optic device which is entered
into the body to view internal organs and structures more clearly.
While the older models used to be equipped with a telescopic lens
attached to a video camera, the newer ones have a minute digital
camera installed at the end of the tube. A light source is provided
either using an LED, xenon, halogen or a solar light bulb. A
laparoscope is usually made from high-quality stainless steel and
thus their insertion do no harm to the patient during the surgery.
The slender tubular scope can vary in size from three millimeters
(0.12 inches) to over 10 millimeters (0.4 inches) in diameter.

How
Laparoscopic Surgery Is Performed
Laparoscopic
surgery brought a revolution in the medical sciences. The traditional
open surgery was painful due to large incision and the patient took a
lot of recovery time post-surgery. With laparoscopic surgery, instead
of making a long and open incision into the body, it requires only
one or multiple small incisions just to insert the laparoscope. The
surgery is conducted by a closeup video imaging that is externally
viewed over the monitor. Then the cavity is generally inflated with
pressurized Carbon dioxide which in non-inflammable and readily
absorbed by the body. This is done to provide more room for the
surgeon to operate. Laparoscopic surgery is a complicated surgery
which requires great hand-eye coordination and an intuitive ability
to steer gentle internal organs.
